Online merchant survey 2022 — Payrexx is the second most used payment provider in Switzerland after PayPal
Even in 2022, Swiss online comerciantes once again participated in the online retailer survey, which was conducted for the fifth consecutive time by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI). In the course of this, it emerged that 25% of all Swiss online comerciantes chose Payrexx as their payment provider, making Payrexx the number 2 in Switzerland behind PayPal, surpassing Datatrans and Worldline.

A total of 625 online merchants participated in the representative survey, which since 2017 has highlighted the most important trends and developments in the e-commerce market, and is supported, among others, by the Handelsverband, of which 496, or 79% of all respondents, are active in Switzerland. Of these participants, 88 percent are engaged in business-to-customer activities, 43 percent in business-to-business, and 13% represent manufacturer shops. Furthermore, with 51%, half of the surveyed merchants are so-called “omni-/multichannel merchants” and 28% are purely online merchants, which are only represented online and do not have a branch. More than half of these participants operate online trading with one to four employees and an annual turnover of less than 500,000 Swiss Francs/Euros. The study can be downloaded from the website of the ZHAW.
Payrexx now number 2 among payment providers in Switzerland — achieving a huge leap
An essential part of the study was, among other things, to find out which Payment Service Provider (PSP) the participating respondents use for processing online transactions. Resulting from the evaluation of all Swiss merchants' information, it was found that 25% of all online shops choose and trust Payrexx as a PSP. This makes Payrexx, which was founded in Thun in 2015, the second most popular payment provider among Swiss online merchants, behind PayPal. In addition, Payrexx managed to surpass notable competitors such as PostFinance (3rd), Worldline (4th), and Datatrans (5th), thereby continuing its success story and growth in recent years, especially confirmed by the market. Considering the market share of 5% that Payrexx could record in the previous year's study, this year's 25% and the associated growth of 20% (!) are particularly noteworthy. This quite remarkable growth rate shows that Payrexx meets the needs and requirements that Swiss SMEs have and expect from a payment provider, both with its offering, its working approach, and its communication style, to their fullest satisfaction.
THE payment provider of Swiss SMEs
Payrexx offers everything that the SME heart desires. The PCI-DSS Level-1 certified Payment Service Provider offers its online merchants all necessary payment methods from a single source. In the form of the so-called “Swiss Collecting” service, customers have access to all locally important payment methods at the push of a button and can offer them easily and without complications in their shop to be able to generate transactions. Therefore, Payrexx is the only provider nationwide to offer the payment methods TWINT, Postfinance, Mastercard, VISA, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, and Apple Pay from a single source with an acceptance contract. Overall, Payrexx comprises 40 payment providers and more than 200 payment methods and currencies from around the world via a single interface.
TWINT is the number 1 payment method for Swiss SMEs in e-commerce
The following are statistics on the transaction volume and the number of transactions generated in August by SMEs in e-commerce in the business-to-business and business-to-customer areas over the Payrexx platform. As part of these representative statistics, transactions from 4,000 merchants were analyzed:

The most used payment method via Payrexx is TWINT with a significant lead, which accounts for 44.64% of all transactions within Switzerland. Mastercard (22.65%) and Visa (20.47%) closely follow in second and third place. Further down the list are Paypal with 4.95% and American Express with 1.70%. It is notable that all credit card payments together are almost as high in quantity as TWINT payments generated.

Unlike the number of transactions, the payment method Mastercard ranks first in volume with a share of 28.19%, followed by Visa (25.53%) and TWINT (19.03%) in second and third place. This, in connection with the previous statistics, suggests that although more payments are made with TWINT, they involve smaller amounts than credit card payments like Mastercard or Visa in this case. Paypal ranks fourth with 6.99% and American Express fifth with a share of 6.45% of the total transaction volume.
