Swiss online stores: Online sales double on Black Friday

Thun, December 02, 2021 - The Swiss payment service provider Payrexx recorded above-average growth in online sales for its e-commerce merchants on Black Friday.

In Switzerland, Black Friday is already the biggest shopping event of the year. It always takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving in the USA and fell on November 26 this year. E-commerce retailers also benefit from the highest-turnover day of the year.

The Swiss payment service provider Payrexx specializes in the processing of digital payments for small and medium-sized e-commerce merchants and has conducted a data collection of online transactions on Black Friday 2021 and the Friday before. It also analyzed the development of transactions on Black Friday compared to the previous year.

Online sales twice as high

Compared to Friday of the previous week, online sales processed via the Payrexx payment platform more than doubled on Black Friday. The busiest times in terms of sales were in the morning. Consumers were particularly keen to buy between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, as the following charts show.

Online purchases increased by 85 percent

The number of transactions has increased by around 85% and the 10% increase in the average basket size also shows that consumers are prepared to spend more money on Black Friday.

Returns compared to last year

Compared to Black Friday 2020, the analysis of the average transaction volume per retailer showed a decrease of 25%. While the volume last year was CHF 1,346 per retailer, this year it was CHF 1,014.

Data from Adobe Analytics provides an explanation for this. According to the data, consumers returned to the stores more frequently this year, which led to a decline in online retail.

Data collection

The data shows an evaluation of the transactions processed via the Payrexx platform. The analysis is based on a sample of 550 e-commerce small businesses with a maximum transaction volume of CHF 1 million per year. The measurement includes data from 19.11.2021, 26.11.2021 and 27.11.2020 between 0:00 and 23:59.
