Use Case Madame Frigo: Public Fridges Against Food Waste

In Switzerland, nearly a third of all food produced ends up in the waste (2.8 million tonnes per year), which has far-reaching and unnecessary consequences for animals, humans and our planet.

The non-profit association Madame Frigo is therefore actively combating food waste in Switzerland with public refrigerators and awareness-raising measures. True to the motto "plate instead of bin", food can be exchanged at the currently 90 locations throughout Switzerland — bring what you no longer need yourself and take what you are still missing at home. Together with the more than 400 volunteers, over 100 tonnes of food were saved last year.

Together against Food Waste

Despite this great progress, there is still much to do. For 2022, Madame Frigo has therefore set itself the goal of increasing the number of locations to 150! With the help of its current Christmas fundraising campaign, Madame Frigo wants to achieve this goal as quickly as possible. Every single donation contributes to the fight against food waste and creates a more sustainable future. In addition, Madame Frigo also draws attention to food waste via its website and social media in order to encourage as many people as possible to join in.

What lies behind Madame Frigo

To guarantee the maintenance of the refrigerators, each Madame Frigo refrigerator is operated by volunteer helpers. They take care of the hygienic maintenance and checking of the contents.
