On this year's Black Friday, which fell on 24 November, the online Comerciante of Payrexx recorded a significant increase in sales. This year's sales even surpass those of the Corona year 2020, during which online shopping boomed and was predominantly conducted online for a period.

The Swiss payment provider Payrexx conducted a data collection study with 900 typical SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises with 1–100 employees). The companies included Comerciante from various sectors such as event services, classic online shops, healthcare services, education, and gastronomy.

Online sales on Black Friday 107 percent higher

Compared to the previous Friday, the online sales processed via the Payrexx payment platform more than doubled on Black Friday. The exact growth between the two weeks is 107%, despite declining basket values of the consumers. The peak sales times on Black Friday were between 9 am and 3 pm, as shown in the following graphic.

Sales increase compared to previous years

Year-on-year, there is a trend towards higher sales on Black Friday. Compared to Black Friday 2022, the analysis showed an increase in the average transaction volume per Comerciante of approximately 34%. Last year, the volume was still an average of EUR 1'106 per Comerciante, while this year it was EUR 1'476 on Black Friday.

Even compared to the year 2020, when shopping online increased significantly due to the Corona pandemic (on average seven transactions and EUR 1’356 sales per Comerciante), this year's sales on Black Friday are at a record high with an average of twelve transactions and EUR 1’476 sales per Comerciante.

Number of online purchases increased by 71 percent since 2020

The increasing sales despite lower basket values can be explained as follows: while the average basket value of the consumers has been decreasing since 2020 (-28%), the number of transactions in the online shops has been steadily rising since 2020 (+71%). This means that while less money is being spent, shopping online is happening more frequently.

Data collection

The data shows an analysis of the transactions processed via the Payrexx platform. The analysis is based on a sample of 900 e-commerce companies. The measurement includes data from 13.11.2023, 26.11.2023, 25.11.22, 26.11.21, and 27.11.20 between 00:00 and 23:59 hours.
