In many parts of the world, it is dangerous to be a woman – especially during pregnancy and childbirth. Women’s Hope International, a non-profit organisation based in Bern, has made it its mission to counter these risks.

Noian’s path to independence

An example of the sustainable work of Women's Hope International is the story of Noian from Bangladesh. Five years ago, she took part in a project against child marriage and received a goat to promote her financial independence.

Today, Noian has her own herd of 20 goats and can use the proceeds not only to finance her own education, but also that of her siblings. Her dream is to become a doctor. “This example shows how even small support can make a big difference,” says Selina Leu.

Challenges and opportunities in fundraising

The organisation reaches its supporters primarily through traditional channels such as donation letters and its in-house magazine “Weitwinkel”, in which it places its projects in a broader context. But digital channels are also playing an increasingly important role, reports Selina Leu: “We are working on a new website and are seeing a growing share of digital donations.”

At the same time, digital transformation brings new challenges. As a smaller organisation with limited resources, it is difficult to keep up with major players. But instead of relying on expensive solutions, the organisation uses creative approaches: “We cannot afford expensive agency solutions — but we can look at how the big players do it and try to get the best out of it in a targeted way and with great dedication.”
