Use Case Madame Frigo: Public refrigerators against food waste

In Switzerland, almost a third of all food produced is wasted every year (2.8 million tonnes per year), which has far-reaching and unnecessary consequences for animals, humans, and our planet.

The non-profit association Madame Frigo is therefore actively fighting food waste in Switzerland with public refrigerators and awareness-raising measures. True to the motto "Plate instead of waste", food can be exchanged at the currently 90 locations throughout Switzerland — bring what you no longer need yourself and take what you are still missing at home. Together with the more than 400 volunteers, over 100 tonnes of food were saved last year.

Together against food waste

Despite this great progress, there is still much to do. For 2022, Madame Frigo has therefore set itself the goal of increasing the number of locations to 150! With the help of its current Christmas donation campaign, Madame Frigo wants to achieve this goal as quickly as possible. Every single donation contributes to the fight against food waste and creates a more sustainable future. In addition, Madame Frigo also draws attention to food waste via its website and social media in order to encourage as many people as possible to join in.

This is what is behind Madame Frigo

To ensure the maintenance of the refrigerators, each Madame Frigo refrigerator is operated by volunteers. They take care of hygienic maintenance and checking the contents.
