SEPA

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a unified Euro payment area that standardises transfers, direct debits and card payments in 36 European countries.

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area)

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) comprises 36 countries — the EU/EEA states plus Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, Vatican City and the United Kingdom. Within the SEPA area, uniform rules and standards apply for Euro payments: credit transfers, direct debits and card payments work just as easily across borders as they do domestically.

For Swiss companies, SEPA is particularly relevant if you have customers or suppliers in the EU area. SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT) reach the recipient within one banking business day. SEPA Direct Debits (SDD) enable the automatic collection of recurring payments in Euros.

Switzerland participates in the SEPA area but is not an EU member. Swiss banks support SEPA credit transfers in EUR; participation in SEPA direct debits is voluntary for Swiss institutions. For CHF payments within Switzerland, the Swiss payment transaction standards (SIC) still apply.

SEPA Examples

A Swiss company transfers a supplier invoice in Euros via SEPA transfer to a German supplier — within one banking business day.

A German customer pays in a Swiss online shop via SEPA direct debit in EUR.

SEPA Direct Debit enables a SaaS provider to automatically collect monthly subscription fees from the EUR accounts of its EU customers.
